What We Pass

Heirloom: a valuable object that has belonged to a family for generations.

Maybe you have an heirloom that sits in a jewelry box or a cabinet in your house — a treasured artifact passed down from your great-grandparents to your grandparents to your parents and now to you. But at one point, these were simply everyday items. The watch that has faithfully kept time for decades, the quilt that provided warmth for a newborn when the heat failed, or the secret family recipe that was perfected through countless kitchen experiments. Each of these things are just that things. Things that served a purpose and were built to last a long time.

In today's world, we seem to have more and more things—more and more things that take up space and fulfill a need but may not be worth passing down to the next generation. Perhaps we need to consider what heirlooms we choose to pass down.

Imagine passing down heirlooms that can shape the next generation's character by investing in who they are, not what they have. What if we passed down heirlooms like courage, discipline, justice, humility, patience, assertiveness, trust, and courage?

Or, contrarily, you may pass down heirlooms like fear, cheating, laziness, selfishness, and anger.

These values show up in how you live your life every day. These simple everyday items are what you get to pass on to the next generation. You can choose to live a life of fear and scarcity, a life that will pass down weakened and worse values, or you can live a life of courage and abundance, a life that will pass down strengthened and better values.

What could be more valuable to the next generation than having the courage to live out the values that make the world a better place? What if we treated these everyday values as the precious heirlooms they really are? If we do this, we ensure that our legacy not only lives on but is also enriched, carrying on our strength and fortitude for generations to come.

Happy Father's Day!
